Un vecino — anciano y generoso — me llevaba a caminar

Él zigzagueaba por borracho

y yo zigzagueaba por defectuoso.

Ustedes me han visto,

hoy corro maratones

y si regreso ebrio algunas noches

una mano se apoya en las paredes

y otra mano se sostiene de algo zigzagueante.

Because of an orthopedic handicap,

when I was little

I had flat feet and only one pair of shoes.

A neighbor — old and generous — took me on walks

holding my hand.

He zig-zagged because he was drunk

and I zig-zagged because of my handicap.

You have seen me,

now I run marathons

and if I return drunk some nights

one hand rests on the wall

while the other holds onto something zig-zagging.
