Already Spoken

Isabelle Shepherd

        water remember

   what was before

   your running

& wind stay

       close the light

     has gone out

of each eternity

    open as the mouth

        & its careless

voice the gates

       old & already

  spoken last night

       fallen with birds

         through summer’s

solid air

   the blue playing

       without rules

       ringing between

hours this deepening

     claimed by tomorrow

          broken in rhythm

      & without simile

         as the silent name

  of yesterday as

      a written sound —

             its black notes

white with clouds
