Burning Idea

Rodrigo Toscano

Of course, one word after the other, then

A babblery of words bundled, and then

Wildfire, what’s civilly called, Idea

Conflagration scorching inert verbiage.

Idea, then wanting its own cool name

Pairing up next to different Ideas

With dandyish names like, Precept, calling

All attention on Idea—as torch

All focus on Idea—as dowser

A monopoly on the whole affair

National myth, tribal lore, in-group brand.

Some sonnets manage to scamper away

Other sonnets, surrounded, immolate

Yet others, form a sort of defense line.
