what . who knows what

they fed on . small beyond sight .

sweetfat . I had too much . sugar

in my belly . she poked at . my face

in my father’s big gut . pushed it . hard

balloon . got a big baby in there . I said . I’ll push out

the water . be the baby . he scoured the floor with . acid . vomited

when guests arrived . pristine . dry heat . frenzy into white tile . hefting

periods . of yesterday . denatured by blue cleaner . only I watched . them

at work . after work . he in the garden . watering more garden . she blaming

him . for the ants . taking over our home . for other women . nightmare . watching

my own making . pink . diligent . fact not feeling . let me be wildly flawed . let me

be loved . anyway . hose spraying . hour in the dark . her hall dark . at the motel

again . drawer of guest . soaps still in wrappers . more than one . could possibly wash out

Mary Zhou is a multimedia artist from Orange County, California, exploring Chinese ancestral spirituality and queer diasporic identity. They are the author of chapbook cave mouth tongue loose (The Head & The Hand Press, 2024) and their work is forthcoming or published in Michigan Quarterly Review, swamp pink, The Offing, and Fence.
