You Must Be Kind to the Earth Because One Day It Will Cover You Like a Blanket

John Paul Martinez

If I should miss my                                                                                    exit

If I must propel my                        -self through the grace                        of the dead

            refined mammals                              Should destiny misplace

me                                                    Should I finally grasp           the reprieve

for which I daily pray                                                                                 & I pray daily

for each animal to fall asleep                                                                      with a full stomach & some

promise of tomorrow                          How I’ll love each friend

their general concern                          How they love to only ever know

the intricacies                                     How they question me through even

            the softest of pixels

                                                      From which stalk of leaves

are the ones behind you looming

What more is there to add

                                                      to the accomplishment of many

To arrive less carnivorous            more avian            in retreat

                                    To resuscitate                              an undying

To          What I hoped to hear from you  influence stoplights

To          is that you are well  yell inside

                                                  I’m so glad  our dreams

                                                  that you have made it

To uproot          all the vacancies             which you have planted

To return                                                  yourself to the soil

To discover        all your neat beds            beneath it
